Huh? Really? Metallica Sucks? II
So I talked to my friend again regarding his lost of respect for Metallica and I told him what I found on the internet. He explained that he was trying to make a point that Metallica is doing things just for their benefits only. His point of view is Metallica was trying to cease any format of music downloading in the expense of Napster back in 2000 in order to prevent them from losing money, but now the metal boys see the internet is an opportunity (look at Radiohead and Prince) and they try to milk it as much as possible from letting people downloading their music to their videos for a price. So that is why he said at the end of the day Metallica is just about money. Now I understand my friend's point of view and I have to say SORRY FOR SLASHING MY FRIEND ON MY BLOG WITHOUT FULLY UNDERSTANDING HIS POINT OF VIEW, and I think he has a point there.

Dear Vince,
some clarification on the subject matter:
to suggest that Metallica sued Napster to prevent them from losing money - and now, to do everything online to gain MORE money, is very, very simplistic.

Metallica challenged Napster not only because they were outraged that their recordings were being duplicated and distributed without their consent.
Metallica also wants to support the many less prominent artists who are unable to fight Napster or any other corporation trying to undermine their art and well-being. Thousands of artists depend on record royalties to survive, to support their families and to create more new music. Napster takes royalties from these artists. It shouldn't come as a surprise that most musicians can keep going only if people actually buy their music, as opposed to getting it free from Napster -- and for every wildly successful band like Metallica, there are thousands of artists who are barely able to get by. Left unchecked, Napster threatens the livelihood of every writer and musician. And except for the most established artists, Napster will also eliminate the funding from record labels needed to pay the significant costs of making and marketing new records.
The irony of this all is that Napster could lead to a future with far less music, rather than more.

Read the rest, and i think it puts the whole internet-sharing/music/money / artists vs fans argument into a slightly better perspective.
the likes of Radiohead and Prince didn't really revolutionize the idea of sharing/selling music and the internet. At the time, 7-8 years ago, it was artists like Dr. Dre (who fought WITH Metallica) against Napster to find a better means of understanding the impact of the internet in relation to music, and the role of choice for musicians.
hope this is helpful.
Metallica's NEW album "Death Magnetic" drops in September '08.
Ezra
Thanks Ez.
